Some clarification of copyright is in order. When paintings or limited edition prints are sold the reproduction rights are retained by the artist. Only the artwork itself is sold. Any kind of printed publication of images in books or magazines is not permitted without negotiated royalties to the artist.
Alteration of the artwork is not permitted. Sold works of art may not be defaced or altered. Owners of the artwork may not for instance paint over some part of the image for whatever reason. They may not use the artwork as a base for their own creative work and then claim the entire image as their original artwork.
These rights are automatic under California law where the paintings are produced and no further contracting other than existing law is required for their enforcement. As for the downloading and use of images from this site the preferences of the artist are as follows.
Low resolution images may be freely downloaded by visitors to the site without compensation to the artist. If there is to be secondary usage such as backgrounds for other websites or forwarding of the images, the artists simply requests a proper attribution under his name “Kenji Konishi,” and a link to his home page http://kenjik.com/
High resolution images are available to patrons only. Their use is free to patrons for personal use. Secondary usage, especially for profit, is conditional on negotiated royalties on a case by case basis.
